A look into the past: excerpt from NMC’s very first publication.

This year the College Council at Northwestern Michigan College sponsored a Fine Arts contest which has awarded cash prizes in the following categories: prose, poetry, and two prizes in the visual arts.

The winner in the prose category was Phil Roycraft for his story “The Long Row.”

The winner in the poetry category was Mike Masley for his poem “Seven variations on a Spider’s Theme.”

The two winners in the Visual Arts category were Sydney Wilson for her untitled photograph and Roger Gilroy for his lithograph entitled “Final.”

The prose and poetry portions of the Fine Arts contest were judged by Walter Lockwood, author of Jones Unbound, a novel published by Prentice-Hall in 1973. Mr Lockwood is an English instructor at Grand Rapids Junior College.

The Visual Arts portion of the Fine Arts contest was judged by Nancy Church, art instructor at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan, and by Joseph Send, an art instructor at the Traverse City Public School System.

All the winning selections are published in this edition of FRESH FRUIT.
